When Ansley's brother Beck was little, his favorite movie was The Jungle Book.

Monday: parts of speech
Tuesday: independent clause, dependent clause, subjects, predicates, type of sentence
Wednesday: appositive, predicate adjective, predicate noun, rewrite the sentence to make a compound sentence
Thursday: Diagram the sentence

Weekly Focus Question:
How do I produce technical writing that follows an organized pattern?

Weekly Learning Focus:
Students will follow an organizational structure of a resume to obtain a job. 
Students will examine models of business correspondance.
Students will create a resume and cover letter (letter of application) for a job at TEENS 4 GREEN.

Last week, students worked on APPLICATIONS for EMPLOYMENT (due Thursday, 10/29).
We discussed JOBS and CAREERS and our UPCOMING UNIT on TECHNICAL WRITING.

This week, students took notes on the PARTS of a RESUME (Monday/Tuesday).  download Parts of a Resume
They completed a list of their personal SKILLS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE EXTRACURRICULUAR ACTIVITES, and ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

On Wednesday, students will take notes on the PARTS OF A BUSINESS LETTER and HOW TO WRITE A COVER LETTER.

Thursday/Friday - students will work on drafting & typing their RESUMES and COVER LETTERS.

NEXT WEEK:  Students will hand in business documents above and THEN work on LETTERS of RECOMMENDATION.  These technical writing documents are PHASE ONE of the Technical Writing Unit.

Students will fill out job applications for TEENS 4 GREEN.
Students will follow the structure of filling out applications (personal info, education, references, employment history).

We discussed the procedures for filling out JOB APPLICATIONS and discussed things to do when filling out applications for employment.

Wednesday, Oct. 14th

DGP #8 Adele's cousin took a rafting trip on the Colorado River.
Today we worked on the parts of a sentence (prep phrase, direct object)

Students completed the classwork from yesterday (LESSONS 1, 2 on Main Idea).

There will be a test on Friday on diagramming.

Students will identify main idea and supporting details in informational text (articles).

Today we used our LIT book to examine text features in non-fiction text.  We also discussed how to determine the MAIN IDEA and identify SUPPORTING DETAILS.

Wednesday, Oct. 7th

Today students took the GRAPHICS TEST.  This test was an assessment on the lessons we completed last week on how to read diagrams, graphs, charts, and tables.

BOOK POINTS were collected TODAY for Quarter 1.

Tuesday, Oct., 6th

DGP #7 Students wrote the DGP sentence and completed PARTS OF SPEECH

Students read "What Makes a Car Run?" in the RJ book (pages 214-216).
They then responded to questions on headings, illustrations, and main idea - RJ 217

Students on Field Trips

There are (2) fieldtrips this week and many students will be missing our POST TEST on Friday, October 9th.

Students who will be OUT OF CLASS on Friday CAN TAKE the POST TEST.....

Thursday morning at 8:15am OR Friday morning at 8:15am.

Students who do NOT take the test on Thursday OR Friday can make arrangements with their CONNECTIONS TEACHER to take the test during CONNECTIONS on Wednesday OR Thursday.

Book Points are DUE

Book Points are due this Wednesday, Oct. 7th.
Students are required to read independently AND ACROSS the CONTENT areas.  Book points for CONTENT AREA textbook logs can be submitted with class notes and students MUST include their chapter/unit quiz and test grades  Students worked on completing BOOK POINTS in class last Friday.

Here are some ways students can get BOOK POINTS in the CONTENT AREAS:

Social Studies - Textbook Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4
Science - Textbook Chapters 11.2, 2.2, 3.1
Math Textbook - Chapter 4
Language Arts - short stories (8 read in class)
Language Arts - articles (10 read in class)
Students need to use the ATTACHED READING REVIEW sheets to complete BOOK POINTS.

Book Points are a TEST GRADE that is calculated at the end of the quarter.

ELA8RC1 1,000,000 Words

The student reads a minimum of 25 grade-level appropriate books for book equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words) per year from a variety of subject disciplines. The student reads both informational and fictional texts in a variety of genres and modes of discourse, including technical texts related to various subject areas.
