Today's DGP (Daily Grammar Practice):
Each student must bring his/her book, paper, and pencil to class.
Students corrected the sentence and wrote in the PARTS OF SPEECH.

Writer's Workshop
We discussed the ELEMENTS of a NARRATIVE (RJ, pg 92) and students received several handouts:
Guidelines for writing a narrative (how to start, complete the middle, end)
How to punctuate dialogue
Students completed RJ, page 93 on their topic and we drafted in class.  We will continue our drafts tomorrow and Wednesday. FINAL NARRATIVES are due on Tuesday, Sept. 8th.

NO HOMEWORK

The Wave is DUE

A test will be given on The Wave this Friday, August 28th.  This is the LAST CHANCE students can submit summaries for the book (which was the summer reading).

Planning our Narrative - August 26th

Writer's Workshop
Standard:  ELA8W2 - Writing a Personal Narrative
Today we discussed planning our PERSONAL NARRATIVES.  We used our LIT book, pages 144, 147, 148 and RJ pg 92 as a guide to developing our topic.

A personal narraitve, or a memoir, tells the story of a memorable event, time, or situation in a writer's life.
FREE WRITE|
In the WNB (#8) students should list special times, memories, events that they remember.  Pg. RJ 92 demonstrates how students can develop their list and gives them the guidelines for their narrative.
HOMEWORK
1.  Use pg 92 in RJ book to make a list in WNB
Put a star next to the event that can become a topic for your narrative
2.  Fill in the topic and list the characters, setting, actions in the SPIDER MAP that was handed out
3.  The Wave test is Friday, August 28th
4.  The Wave book summaries are due on Friday, August 28th (LAST CHANCE)

DGP#2
Today we worked on the parts of a sentence:
simple and compound subjects, simple and compound predicates, purpose of a sentence, type of sentence

LESSON
We discussed a PLOT diagram and students completed an assignment on PLOT.  We then read a short narrative, "The Attic" RJ, page 37 and completed a PLOT DIAGRAM on the story.

HOMEWORK
Complete your plot diagram on page 37

Monday, August 24th

DGP #2   Our family had a picnic on Labor Day
Students corrected the sentence and listed the parts of speech.

Writing Assignment
Students completed the writing assignment started on Friday.

Reading Workshop
Today we worked in our Reader's Journey book.
We read, "What is a Narrative" on page 22 and filled in a graphic organizer on an event in our life that introduced a problem.
We discussed"Guidelines for Marking the Text" (pg 23) and practiced marking a narrative in our book, "WaterMan Comics" - (pg 24).
Students learned that when reading a story or book, they can make connections.

TEXT - WORLD connections - connect something in the story to a movie, tv, or someone you know

HOMEWORK - due Friday, Aug. 21st
