Today we worked in PERSUASIVE TEAMS.  Groups are working to develop a product to market to a company. EACH team:
Creates a name for product
Determine what makes it different
Create ingredients, nutritional facts, size, facts, features, colors/shapes, etc
Design product package/box
Sketch your prototype
Write a description that includes all information
WE WILL WORK ON THIS PART OF THE PROJECT FOR TWO MORE DAYS

Today we reviewed our TEST PRACTICE.  Tomorrow is the test on SENTENCE STRUCTURE.

Monday Guidance

Today Mrs. Griffith, our guidance counselor, came to our class to discuss BULLYING.

Students have a TEST on THURSDAY on sentence structure (complex, simple, compound).

We read a persuasive article called "Helmets Save Lives".  Students completed an ARGUMENT CHART on the article.  We have been reading about persuasive writing for the past two days and students finally had the chance to practice reading on their own.

Today we discussed PERSUASIVE WRITING and read an introduction in the WAG book (124-127.

REPORT CARDS GO HOME!

During 2nd homeroom, REPORT CARDS were distributed to students.  Students signed for their report cards and need to return them for signature verification.  If you have a question about a specific grade, you may request a GRADE PRINT OUT from that teacher.  Please utilize our I-Parent system

Please make sure you sign your child's report card.  It will be returned to you once the signature is recorded.

Quarter 2 Begins

This week, we spent time REVIEWING grammar concepts:

conjuctions
pronouns
compound sentences
complex sentences
compound-complex sentences

Students worked for two days on assignments reinforcing these concepts in the WAG textbook and workbook.  On Thursday, students took the remainder of the work home for completion.  WAG 376, 521, 522, 446, 449, 451; WKBK 83-86, 41-42, 121-122

DOL#8 was a compound-complex sentence. 
The DOL was collected on Friday.  Since this was a NON-DOL TEST week, we gave the students a blank copy of this week's DOL questions to complete as CLASS WORK.

It is our hope that this encourages students to pay attention during daily warm-up activities.  We have noticed that while many students complete the weekly DOL and score 100%, they are failing the DOL quizzes and NOT studying.

The last day of QUARTER 1 is Friday, October 10, 2008.

Short Stories DUE Thursday!

  For the past two weeks, students have been working IN CLASS on creating short stories.
EACH student has worked on developing a PLOT, completing a PLOT DIAGRAM, and writing a ROUGH DRAFT.

Short story REQUIREMENTS were handed out to students.  Many students have gotten their short stories edited by parents and guardians.  If you have NOT read your child's SHORT STORY, please ask!

SHORT STORIES are DUE on Thursday.  Students are advised to TAKE THEIR DRAFTS HOME so they can write the FINAL DRAFT in INK or TYPE IT.
