School-Wide MOCK Writing Assessment

Awtrey will be giving students a MOCK WRITING ASSESSMENT
on Wednesday, August 27th.

The writing assessment models the Georgia 8th Grade Writing Assessment.  It is a chance for students to practice writing from a prompt under simulated testing conditions.

Students will take the MOCK Writing Assessment in HOMEROOM and there will be an altered schedule for the day.  Students will follow a SKINNY SCHEDULE and attend all classes.

Tuesday, August 26th

DOL - students listed PARTS of SPEECH for each word.

We defined words from our NARRATIVE VOCABULARY list (audience, purpose, pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, publishing).

Reading
Today, we also read a short story entitled, "A Day's Wait" by Ernest Hemingway in our Literature book.  We discussed suspense and building a climax.  Students completed a summary of the ending.

DOL #2  This week's sentence
My favorite teacher teaches math in the morning, science in the afternoon, and reading to a small group in the after school program.

We read an autobiographical narrative in our LIT book entitled, "Our Finest Hour". We discussed audience purpose and embarrassing moments.

Thrashing Thursday!

DOL - Students revised the DOL sentence and made it a compound sentence.

We played a word game called WHIP IT! and explored ADJECTIVES.
Read aloud - Ms. Bailey read Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox.  The "quick read" focused on adjectives and descriptive words.

Teachers checked HOMEWORK from Tuesday (vocab).  Please make sure homework is completed - 14 students served LUNCH DETENTION and received CONDUCT CUTS.

Today, we read a short story in the WAG book (pg 50-51) entitled, "The Bike".  We discussed how the conflict (fear of the corner) helped build the story.

Terrific Tuesday!

DOL - Write the sentence VERTICALLY and list the PARTS OF SPEECH.

We discussed autobiographical narratives and read our WAG book, pages 48 & 49.

Students can WRITE the definitions ON THE VOCABULARY SHEET

Journal Entry #2 - Childhood Event
Narrate the events related to the childhood memory that you've chosen so that your readers will understand why the event was important and memorable.

What isPaper_pencil a writer's notebook (WNB)?
We discussed the use of our comp books as WRITER'S NOTEBOOKS.

Students made a list in their WNB of what good writers write about. 
LIST:  Good writers write about......family, friends, memories, school drama, moving, vacations, dentist visits, chores, neighbors, little brothers, clothes, goals, dreams, favorite songs, family traditions, secrets, themselves, events, problems, what makes them happy/sad, things they see!

Journal Entry #1  Students were directed to write about one of the items on their list. 

WAG Books(Writing and Grammar) books were issued TODAY!
Students need to TAKE their TEXTBOOKS home and LEAVE them there until May.
