Comma Practice

TODAY in homeroom, students took a SCHOOL WIDE WRITING ASSESSMENT.  The test was from 9:15-11:10, and BLOCKS 1 & 2 did NOT meet.

Today in class (blocks 3,6,7)....

We reviewed rules #1-4 and completed activities on the use of commas.
HOMEWORK due Thursday (given Tuesday)

Tuesday, Jan. 15th

DOL - Write vertically and list the parts of speech for each word.

LESSON
Rule#4
- Use a comma after an introductory word, phrase, or clause.
Example:  Oh, I'm ready to go to the mall now!
Example:  After the dance, she walked to the car.

Rule #5 - Use a comma to set off parenthetical expressions.  A parenthetical expression can be at the beginning, end, or middle of a sentence.
Example:  Watch, mom, while I show off my new moves.
Example:  You will, therefore, take the test tomorrow.
Example:  I know you will go, Frank.

Many students think carefully about their goals before high school, and they are usually prepared to take honors classes.

1.  We reviewed rules #1-#3 for using commas.
2.  Ms. Bailey went over assignments from LAST WEEK and students have the opportunity to complete "unfinished" grammar work.
3.  Students made a COMMA GLOSSARY
The COMMA GLOSSARY will contain ALL the rules for using commas and include (2) examples/sentences for each.
HOMEWORK
Finish WORD WEBS - due Tuesday.
Finish any incomplete work from last week.

Students add today’s RULES/Key Concepts to the rules from yesterday. They need to KEEP the rules and examples for this unit in THEIR BINDERS.   
ASSIGNMENT:
1. Copy rule #3 (key concept) is on pg. 588 AND rule #4 is on 587.

2. Students MUST write (2) sentences that show they know how to use EACH rule.

Friday, Jan. 11

Students took Quarter 2 POST test.  Students worked on a spelling assign ment after the test.

ASSIGNMENT: Students will use spelling words 1-10 and complete a WORD WEB on each words. 
They MUST draw a WORD WEB for each word.  They can complete for homework – due Monday.

HOMEWORK:  Complete WORD WEB for spelling words 1-10.  EACH spelling word has a web.

Ms. Bailey will be out this week

Dear Parents:

I had a death in the family and will be out this week.  I had the opportunity to meet with the substitute and go over the curriculum items for this unit.  Students will be working as planned on a mini comma unit. There is NO DOL this week, but students do have new spelling words.  Feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions.

1.       Students took QUARTER 3 PRE-Test on scantron

2.       Copied new spelling words and completed spelling pg. 41.

HOMEWORK – find the definitions for spelling words 1-10 in a dictionary- due Thursday

Wednesday, January 9th

We are starting a unit on COMMAS – the rules (key concepts) for using commas are in Chapter 26 (585-597) WAG – Writing and Grammar book. – on shelf in back of room.

Students will complete (2-3) rules per day.  They need to KEEP the rules and examples for this unit in THEIR BINDERS.  All classwork/homework (exercises/workbook) for the commas rules are handed in DAILY.

ASSIGNMENT:   
1. Copy rule #1 (key concept) is on pg. 585 AND rule #2 (key concept) is on 587

2. Students MUST write (2) sentences that show they know how to use EACH rule.

SAMPLE:  Rule#1   Use a comma before a conjunction to separate 2 independent clauses.

                        The dog ate my homework, and I was very upset.

HOMEWORK:  Spelling definition homework will be checked on Thursday.
