Progress Reports

Progress Reports were sent home yesterday!
Students received a GREEN cover sheet that includes their averages.  If the student received a D or F, then teachers attached a print out of the grade.

PLEASE RETURN THE PROGRESS REPORT signed to the HOMEROOM TEACHER.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back from your 4-day weekend!

We have started a PERSUASIVE UNIT. 

On Monday, we introduced Persuasive Vocabulary and started to define words we will be using during the unit.  We had a classroom discussion on what persuasion is - a way to convince readers.

On Tuesday, we answered questions about persuasive reading and used our Reader's Handbook.  We also worked in our WRITER'S HANDBOOK and completed a journal entry #1.

Persuasive Journal Entry #1
Your favorite tv show is being canceled.  Write a letter/entry about why you think your tv show should NOT be canceled.  Include (2) reasons (support) and include examples for each.

Today, Wednesday, we reviewed our persuasive assignment from yesterday then completed a entry # 2 in our WRITER'S NOTEBOOK.  We also read our first persuasive article, HELMETS SAVE LIVES.

What do you think about middle schools having recess/activity time after lunch? Write a journal entry and include your opinion and give support/reasons with examples.
Wednesday, 11/28 HOMEWORK
Watch a tv commercial OR cut out an advertisement from the paper/magazine.  Answer these questions:
1.  What is the product?
2.  What does the company use to sell the product?
3.  What is the slogan/jingle/song?
Write out on LOOSE LEAF paper.

Today, students started working on their MOVIE REVIEW.  They will continue tomorrow and HAND in the final copy at the end of class.

Extra Credit

An extra credit assignment was given on Friday., 11/16 for BLOCKS 6 & 7.
It is due Monday, 11/19 for BLOCKS 6 & 7.

DOL Quiz & Vocabulary Test

Because of the movie, the DOL Quiz will be on Monday, November 19th!
Students have the weekend to go over their weekly DOL.

The Vocabulary test is Tuesday, November 20th!
Students defined the (10) vocabulary words and need to know the following:
Definition
How to use the word correctly
How to identify the part of speech

On Monday and Tuesday, students will write a MOVIE REVIEW for the movie, FINDING FORRESTER.

Finding Forrester

Finding_forrester We are watching the movie, FINDING FORRESTER.  Students are taking notes and will be required to write a MOVIE REVIEW.
The movie will take Wed., Thurs., and Friday.  Students will get their guidelines on Friday.  The final MOVIE REVIEW will be completed IN CLASS on Monday and Tuesday, 11/19 & 11/20.

STORY LINE
Because of scoring exceptionally high on a state wide standardized exam and being an exceptionally good basketball player, Jamal Wallace is sent to a prestigious prep school in Manhattan. He soon befriends the reclusive writer, William Forrester (played by Sean Connery).
