This Week's Recap...

The week went by with a blink.....

Tuesday's DOL - parts of speech
Wednesday's DOL - Simple subject, compound predicate, direct object, participle phrase
Thursday's DOL - prepositional phrases, type of sentence
Friday - NO DOL Quiz

On Monday, we took a NARRATIVE test and worked on some spelling.  On Tuesday, we handed in our NARRATIVES and completed a reflections sheet.  We started a new unit (short stories) and took Cornell notes on Wednesday.

We read two short stories, "Sarah's Top" and "After 20 Years".  We completed plot diagrams and story note sheets while Ms. Bailey and Mrs. Woodward read aloud.

Friday - Spelling test and handed in DOL for the week
On Friday, we also had a lesson on DIALOGUE.  We learned the rules for writing dialogue and how to include proper punctuation.

Monday, Sept. 24th

WEEKLY DOL
Faced with the threat of being eaten, the tortoise crawls into a crack, takes a deep breath, and wedges itself in a hole.
Task:  correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Today, we took a NARRATIVE TEST in class and then worked on a spelling assignment.

NARRATIVE TEST

Monday is our UNIT test on NARRATIVES!

Students can use their Cornell notes on autobigraphical narratives to study.  These notes include types, examples of what narratives include, and information on style, audience, and purpose.

Other terms on the NARRATIVE test include:
Setting, Characters, Plot, Solution, Hook,Transitions, Dialogue, Autobiography, Memoir, Personal Narrative, Revision, Audience, Purpose, Style, Conflict

Narratives Due Tuesday!

Last week, students worked in class revising and editing their personal narratives.

On Friday, students received NARRATIVE GUIDELINES. 

HOMEWORK
Students MUST get their narrative edited by an adult.
Someone at home must use the rubric and criteria to mark the paper.
Papers are due on Tuesday, Sept. 25th!  ALL drafts MUST be handed with the narrative.

Narratives DUE

On Wednesday and Thursday, we revised our essays. On Wednesday, students had an extra credit opportunity to REWRITE their narratives for double homework credit.

On Thursday, we worked on specific parts of the narratives (good beginnings, dialogue, adding details).

Progress Reports

On Wednesday, September 19th, students will receive 4 1/2 week PROGRESS REPORTS.
Please be advised that students SIGN for Progress Reports.

Team 7-1 will also hand out INDIVIDUAL grade print outs to EACH STUDENT that represents EACH class average.

Please sign the one-page Progress Report and have your child return it to their HOMEROOM teacher.,

Revising Narratives

For the past two days (Monday and Tuesday), we have been working on revising our narratives in class.
Students used a REVISION ACTIVITY sheet to complete a series of exercises with their narratives.  FOR EXAMPLE:
1.  Circle (7) verbs.  Use a thesaurus to REPLACE EACH verb.
2.  Highlight (8) nouns in the paper.  Add ONE adjective to EACH noun.
3. Separate your paper into paragraphs.  ADD a transition to each paragraph.
4.  Add two sentences to each paragraph - adding a detail.

Drafts of NARRATIVES were collected on Tuesday for REVIEW.  They will be handed back on Wednesday for students to add a conversation (DIALOGUE).

Happy Friday!

Today, students handed in DOL #3.  There was NO DOL Quiz today.  The DOL Quiz is EVERY OTHER FRIDAY.

Today, we took  a spelling test on last week's words.  Students also had the ENTIRE block to work on their narrative drafts.
