ROUGH Drafts

Today students submitted their formal outlines for a grade.  I made corrections on them and handed them back.
PLEASE check with your child and read the PROJECT GUIDELINES!

We started writing our DRAFTS in class (2/27), but students need to COMPLETE their research summaries/drafts AT HOME.

Drafts should include a paragraph for each roman numeral PLUS an introduction paragraph and closing paragraph.  DRAFTS MUST follow OUTLINES.

We passed out the following sheets so students could go through the process STEP by STEP.

Research over the Weekend

Books_2 NOTE cards are due on Wed., 2/21.  Students should be reading what information they have collected on their topic and taking notes.  NO MORE THAN (7) headings altogether.   Notes should fall under one of the headings.  PLEASE follow the format for NOTE CARDS:

Research

We have been collecting and gathering sources for our research for several days.  Last week, students visited the Media Center/Computer lab and found sources for their topics.  Today, we visited the Media Center and continued to collect references and books.
Now, students should have 2-3 sources.
Next step....
1.  Students use the SOURCE CARD SHEET to keep track of their sources.
2.  Students then use the sheet to make SOURCE CARDS. 

Students NEED 5 SOURCE CARDS (on color index cards). 
(1) book, (1) reference, (2) Internet (1) free choice

3.  Once students have located their sources, they need to begin taking notes.
4.  Students will use white index cards to take notes from their sources.
5.  Each note card must follow the NOTE CARD FORMAT.
Note cards should have headings/topics and should be short and neat.
6.  Once note cards are done, we will sort them, create outlines and draft our research.

Source Card

We are working on HOW TO CITE SOURCES for our research.  I reviewed SOURCE CARDS today and students took notes on:
Sample sources - books with 1 Author
Sample sources - reference material (encyclopedia)
Sample sources - Internet references

We also completed a CLASSWORK assignment in the Research book.

Research Vocabulary Definitions

Pencil_1 source - firsthand document or reference work that gives information
thesis - the main idea of a paper
cite (citation) - to acknowledge or give credit to sources
MLA - a style used by students for research papers
outlining - pre-writing/organizing tool for information
source cards - index cards that show each source used for your paper
include author, title, publisher city, company name, and copyright year
note cards - index cards that include notes for research. 
include heading, # of source, page # and short notes
bibliography - a list of sources used when doing research
research - to gather information
document - to cite evidence or proof from a source
evaluate - to find out the significance or worth
topic - the subject of a piece of writing

Research Process

Libraran Today we finished our RESEARCH VOCABULARY.
We talked about our topics and the research process.

Students will be doing a research project. They will get a broad category (famous people, monuments/structures, inventions, historical documents) then they will CHOOSE their own topic
We will go to the Media Center to get sources and create SOURCE and NOTE cards.
Then, students will sort cards, create outlines and draft their research. 
WE WILL WORK ON THIS UNIT UNTIL March.
