Homophone Test

This Friday we will have a HOMOPHONE TEST this FRIDAY and NOT a spelling test.

Students need to MAKE a list of following words/definitions to study:
Spelling words
Homophone sheet (#10, #11, #12)
Homophone practice sheet (Wed/Thurs lessons)

Many of these words will be on Friday's test!

Tuesday, 10/31

This week's DOL:

The immigrants had been carrying their bags for hours because of the long journey.
Today, students had to list the PARTS of SPEECH for each word.

Classwork:
1.  Writer's Notebook entry# 5 - Topic - Year round school
Explain your VIEWPOINT, SUPPORT (3), and (1) OPPOSING VIEW.

2.  Fact and Opinion sheet - completed and corrected

3.  Persuasive Vocabulary - students looked up (6) persuasive words (see attached).

Thurs., 10/26

BLUE Deficiencies went out TODAY for BLOCKS 2 & 3.  I did NOT get to pass them out in BLOCKS 6 or 7. 
Look for them tomorrow if you think your son/daughter may be getting a grade BELOW 70% in Language Arts.

Today, we worked on a persuasive essay in our Reader's Handbook and talked about how to read persuasive writing. 
Most classes completed the Writer's Notebook, Entry #2 on HOMEWORK.

HOMEWORK
1.   Writer's Notebook Entry #2 - Topic: Homework (some finished in class)
Write your viewpoint, (3) reasons that support your opinion, then explain what the opposing viewpoint might be about homework.
(Remember the opposing viewpoint is the OTHER opinion)
2.   Writer's Notebook Entry #3 - Topic: Gum chewing in school
Write your viewpoint, (3) reasons that support your opinion, then explain what the opposing viewpoint might be about gum chewing.
3.   Study your DOL for tomorrow's DOL QUIZ

Updated Grades

Language Arts grades have been updated!
Students receiving a "D" or "F" will receive a DEFICIENCY TOMORROW!

Tues., 10/24

Today we took a PRE-TEST for Quarter 2.  This grade is used for ASSESSMENT purposes only and will not be a class grade.

Students worked on SPELLING book, pages 27 & 28

HOMEWORK
Spelling sentences 11-20.  Each words MUST be underlined and each sentence MUST contain at least (6) words in LENGTH. - NO SHORT SENTENCES

New Spelling Words- Homophones

Here are the new spelling words.  Students have to know MEANING as well as spelling.

herd, heard, capital, capitol, principle, principal, there, their, straight, strait, compliment, complement, stationery, stationary, idle, idol, hostel, hostile, sheer, shear

We went over the meanings of the words and I gave the students "tricks" to help them remember the appropriate spelling.

Spelling Test

Spelling test on the words posted 10/10 will be this FRIDAY, Oct. 20th.

Tues., Oct. 17th

Students have a NOUN/PRONOUN TEST on Thursday. 

They started a study guide/workbook guide today in class:
Workbook pages 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11.
The test will cover:
Common nouns
Proper nouns
Compound nouns
Collective nouns
Pronouns
Demonstrative nouns
Interrogative pronouns
Infinite pronouns
Antecedents

HOMEWORK
Complete the remainder of the spelling sentences (11-20).
Work on workbook pages/study guide (due Thursday)

Mon., Oct. 16th

Today we worked on Spelling, page 24 and corrected our grammar classwork from last week.

Blocks 6 & 7 went to the BOOK FAIR.

HOMEWORK 
Put spelling words (1-10) in sentences.  Underline the spelling word in each sentence and make sure EACH sentence is AT LEAST (6) words.

Conference Week

This week is conference week, and because of the half day schedule our classes are modified.

Class sessions are 30 minutes and there is NO DOL.
Language Arts classes will be visiting the BOOK FAIR.
