Grammar Study, 8/30

Today's DOL was to name the type of sentence,
label the subject and predicate

We worked in our GRAMMAR textbook, pg 392-393 on subjects and verbs and students RECEIVED their WORKBOOKS.  The Grammar workbooks can stay in the classroom, and students can remove the pages if assigned for homework.

Today in Class

Today's DOL, we labeled the PARTS OF SPEECH.
We finished the story, "The Bike" by Gary Soto, Grammar text -pg 50.
Writer's Notebook Entry #6 "Freewriting" on pg 52 in Grammar text (#1).

HOMEWORK
Spelling sentences 11-20 (add to last night's homework.

Vocabulary Test Returned

Yesterday I returned the Vocabulary Tests and any student scoring below 74% received a PARENT NOTICE. 
Please be aware that these notices in Language Arts are sent out for ALL TESTS  and MAJOR ASSESSMENTS. in class when students get a "D" or "F".  Please sign and return the YELLOW forms.

Please ask your child how they did on Friday's Vocabulary Test.

New Spellng Words, 8/28

These are the new spelling words that we will be working on for the next TWO WEEKS.  Spelling test will be on Friday, Sept. 8th.

Monday's Lesson

1.     Weekly DOL

2.     New spelling words.

3.     Autobiographical Narratives - we discussed the types of autobiographical narratives and students handed in their homework from Friday.

4.     We worked on WNB entry #5 and wrote about a time we learned something new/did something we were not supposed to do. ("The Bike", pg. 50-51 Grammar text).

HOMEWORK
Put spelling words #1-10 in a sentence.  Underline each spelling word.  Sentences MUST have at least 6 words and cannot be short.

Today, we finished a short story, "Was Tarzan a Three-Bandaged Man?" by Bill Cosby. 

Tomorrow students have a DOL quiz and a vocabulary quiz.

Pre-Writing

In our Writer's Notebook, we are writing entries about topics that affect good writers.  On Monday, our classwork was to make a list called, "Good Writers Write About...". 

For homework on Monday, students were assigned to choose one topic from their list and create their FIRST entry in their Writer's Notebook.   THIS IS OUR FIRST PRE-WRITING entry for our narrative writing unit.

DOL

This week we started our DAILY ORAL LANGUAGE.  The DOL is a daily warm-up that focuses on grammar.  EACH week, students will get a DOL sentence.  Each day (Monday - Thursday), students will have a series of grammar tasks to complete on the SAME SENTENCE

Here is this week's DOL sentence:

The cargo train left the station, then it was going to Tennessee.

Mon:    Label the parts of speech for each word in the sentence
Tues:   Name the subject, predicate, and direct object
Wed:   Name the type of sentence, explain why
Thurs: Replace the two verbs in the sentence, add two adjectives|
Fri:    Each Friday is a DOL QUIZ.  The questions from the week will be on the quiz.
