25 Book Points

The end of the marking period is near and students are working to complete their required (6) book points for this quarter. Three of the book points are earned in the content areas (LA, SS, Science) and the remaining (3) MUST be earned by the student.  Students earn book points by READING independent books. 
150 pages = 1 Book Point

Students will receive READING REVIEW TEXT SHEETS in Science and Social Studies on Monday.  Each content area teacher will outline the requirements and let them know what students need to do to earn the 150 pages for the content class.  Students must complete these sheets ON THEIR OWN.  REVIEW SHEETS are handed in during Language Arts class where they are given credit.  Each LA class will keep track of the book points and encourage students to read. 

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS READING AN INDEPENDENT BOOK AND HAS COMPLETED A READING REVIEW SHEET. They are available in Language Arts class and should be handed in by Friday, October 7th for credit for this quarter.

Grade Deficiencies

Grade deficiencies were issued yesterday and today for students who are in danger of failing classes.  They must be signed and returned to individual teachers.   

New Vocabulary Words

Students have new vocabulary/spelling words.

coherence, clincher, introduction, punctuation, grammatical, transitions, lead, conclusion, rubric, detail

These words must be defined and handed in on Friday, October 30th!

Revising Our Narratives

Today, we worked on finishing our FIRST REWRITE.  Students were given class time to rewrite their narratives adding their charges (details) and adjectives.  Tomorrow, we will work on more revising and complete ONE MORE REWRITE.

                     Complete your TEXT REVIEW SHEET on Chapter 4 Grammar and Writing

Students had the entire class today to work on the last two homework assignments.

On Friday, September 30th, students will come home with a BLUE REVISING SHEET. This sheet will walk them through several exercises that will improve their narratives.  On Monday, October 3rd, we will begin EDITING our narratives.

Revising Narratives

Today we worked on several revision activities with our autobiographical narratives.  Students added adjectives and adverbs then used a technique called "charging" to add more details.  We will be revising for the next couple of days.

NOUN UNIT

Students just completed a unit on NOUNS. 

We have just completed Grammar text page 296-298 (exercises 2-5) and page 300 (exercises 6-10).  Some of the work was completed in class, but the incomplete work was assigned for homework.

Workbooks

Students now have Grammar WORKBOOKS!

They have workbooks that are kept in the classroom! 

Progress Reports

Progress Reports were given out to students on Friday, Sept. 16th!

They received a BLUE cover sheet that needs to be filled out and signed by a parent or guardian. Please make sure you review (6) progress reports - (4) academic and (2) connections.

Last Week in Review

During the week of Sept. 12th a lot of things happened:

• Students have NEW spelling/vocabulary words:  chronological order, hook, plot, climax, resolution, conflict, personal narrative, autobiographical narrative, reflective, memoir
• Our class finished up the READ Magazine activity
• We completed our first draft of our narrative
• The students completed a unit on NOUNS in the Grammar & Writing textbook
• We took a DOL Quiz on Friday

HOMEWORK

Mrs. Brownlee read the book Thank You, Mr. Faulker.
Write a one-page summary on the book, Thank You, Mr. Faulker by Patricia Polocco.  Describe Tricia's life before she met Mr. Faulker and explain how her life in school changed after he became her teacher.
Summary due - Thursday, Sept. 8th.
