New Spelling Words

Today students received new spelling words.  For homework tonight, they have a spelling packet (3 sheets) that is due on Wednesday, August 31st.  The spelling test will be Sept. 9th!

OPEN HOUSE

Dear Parents,

It was nice to see so many parents out and about tonight!  If you missed tonight's Open House, have your child pick up a Language Arts newsletter and Parent Agenda for important dates to remember.  I look forward to us having a productive year!

Taking a Family Leave

Dear Parents and Students:

As many of you know, I have recently adopted a newborn.  Starting my students off on the right foot and setting classroom routines was very important to me, so I returned to Awtrey for the first three weeks to start off the school year.  I will be taking a two-week leave to spend time with my new son, Alexander Maxim Evanson.  Ms. Brownlee will be my substitute for the entire time, and we have met regarding the language arts pacing guide and curriculum. Please do not hesitate to email me, as I will be checking it regularly (between feedings)!

Coming Up This Week....

Spelling and Vocabulary tests are on Friday, August 26th.
Students will have a DOL (Daily Oral Language) quiz on Friday as well.
We are completing the short stories "No Gumption" and "An  American Childhood" today!
We have an OPEN BOOK TEST on the two short stories on Friday, August 26th.

25 Book Requirement

Cobb County students are required to earn 25 BOOK POINTS this year.  These book points can be earned by reading independent books, classroom texts (all subjects), short stories, read alouds, articles, and fiction and non-fiction books.  For every 150 pages students read, they recieve (1) book point. The more students read, the more points they earn. Points will "roll over" and students are responsible for keeping track of their book points in LANGUAGE ARTS class.  They maintain their book points in folders and must complete book summaries.  So far in Language Arts, we have read several short stories and read alouds.  Students have completed three summaries that can be used towards a book point - (8) short stories/read alouds = (1) book point. READ! READ! READ!

Writer's Notebook

Students did a great job on decorating their writer's notebooks (composition books). We are in the prewriting phase of the WRITING PROCESS and have been using our writer's notebook for journal entries. Students are writing about their personal experiences and responding to daily writing prompts. These entries will be the SEEDS for our personal and autobiographical narratives. Here are some of the entries we have recorded:

• A family tradition
• Something you have learned
• A very bad day
• A holiday memory
• An older person in your life
